Let Me Show You Why You're Losing Money On Old Keywords

By Peters Q Framptowski

Keywords aren't just any old words. If you don't know what a keyword is, or a keyword phrase, and you're trying to make money online, then you'd better sit back and take notes. Keywords are words that search engine users type in to a search engine to find your site. If your page is not optimized for the keywords relating to your site, then the chances of people who are interested in your goods or services finding your website is slim to none. And Slim has left town!

Now that you know how important keywords are for your ability to make money online, why wouldn't you check on them every so often to make sure they're still bringing in the money? Most people would think that this would be a given, but its not. A lot of affiliate marketers think that once they rank well for one keyword, that keyword will always bring them money. This isn't the case and having a mindset like that will cost you a lot of money down the road.

Since most people have a limited amount of time to work on their website's, it's important to make the most of every minute you have. This is why successful PPC marketers are constantly checking their keyword list and doing away with words that don't pay. You should be doing the same with your website or risk spending a lot of time and money on optimizing your website for keywords that are not paying off. Just look at the Hollywood scene for example. Do you think that there are as many searches these days for Burt Reynolds as there are for Brad Pitt? No. But if the Internet had been around in Burt's hay-day (sorry for dating you Burt), then you would have seen huge searches for Burt instead of Brad.

Keywords come and keywords go. A few short years ago, MySpace didn't even exist and no one was optimizing sites for things like MySpace layouts. The same is true for keywords like Facebook Apps and so on. Things change and you need to stay up with them if you hope to make money on the Internet. Failure to do this will lead you to making less money and being overtaken by your competition.

While some niche keywords just disappear, other change to reflect the times. You'll need to be on the watch for this. This is another reason you want to check up on your keywords on a routine basis. It just doesn't pay to keep non profitable keywords around. You'll just waste time and money by continually optimizing pages for them.

To be consistently profitable, you'll need to ever watchful over your keyword list, getting rid of ones that are no longer searched for and replacing them with hot new keywords everyone is using. Let your competition optimize their site for keywords that no longer bring in visitors!
