Buck Privates: Un-contemporary although engaging Army opus with Bud and Lou inadvertently registering. Brassy melodies (containing Andrews Sister's "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy") and subplots get in the way, however A&C's regimens are amid their best; their first featuring film. The Great Manhunt: Fable of the West is nothing particularly special as McCrea dreams of oil wells, while Donlevy takes his gal. Stanwyck ages to one hundred in her role. Food of the Gods: This is a terrible adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel. An odd event has caused mammoth expansion in the size of wasps, chickens and rats. Cast includes Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, Ida Lupino, Jon Cypher, and Ralph Meeker. (88 minutes, 1976)
Rocky 4: Entirely synthetic (and unessential) continuation has Rocky doin' what a guy's gotta do, avenging a buddy's downfall and fighting for the U.S.A. against a superhuman Russian champ. Still, Stallone knows how to press all the right buttons, particularly in an awesome teaching montage. Cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Carl Weathers, Talia Shire, Burt Youthful, Brigitte Nielsen, Michael Pataki, and James Brown. (91 minutes, 1985)
Ruby's Fantasy: Smooth although typical drive-in fare in regards to a shell-stunned Vietnam vet who finds himself the object of an enormous manhunt in a small Alabama town. It is the same elementary tale as First Blood which came later. Cast includes Linda Blair, Ben Johnson, Matt Clark, and Richard Famsworth. (91 minutes, 1982)
Play Time: Hulot (Tati) drifts through an unrecognizable modern Paris of steel and glass skyscrapers. Scene and noise gags abound in this superbly created film. These assorted effects are connected by Hulot's attempt to keep a meeting. Cast includes Jacques Tali, Barbara Dennek, Jacqueline Lecomte, Valerie Camille, and Leon Doyen. (126 minutes, 1967)
The Great New Wonderful: Striking drama, set one year after 9-11, concentrates on a variety of New Yorkers who either are battling to handle their emotions in regards to that atrocious night or in reference to their lives as if nothing had occurred. They contain a couple with a dysfunctional child, an older lady snared in a miserable matrimony, a set of security guards, and an outwardly affable accountant who worked at the World Trade Center, and survived. Discreet, incisive research of suppressed anger uses humor and observation to dramatize the irnportance of living a life that has meaning. Cast includes Olympia Dukakis, Jim Gaffigan, Judy Greer, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tom McCarthy, Sharat Saxena, Naseeruddin Shah, Tony Shalhoub, Stephen Colbert, Dick Latessa, Can Amett, Anita Gillette, and Edie Falco. Cherish: Unconventional tale of a black sheep who's victimized by a stalker and then engaged in a mishap that lands her in prison however her "jail" is a condo, with an electric gadget shackled to her ankle limiting her movement. In time, the deputy who controls the instrument gets to be her only buddy. Crisp, unique thriller set in San Francisco. Cast includes Robin Tunney, Tim Blake Nelson, Nora Dunn, Brad Seek, Lindsay Crouse, Liz Phair, and Jason Priestley. (102 minutes, 2002)
Onionhead: A messy film with Griffith joining the Coast Guard in pre WW2 and becoming a ships chef. The film tries to be a comedy, a romance, and a drama at the same time and succeeds at none. Cast includes Andy Griffith, Felicia Farr, Walter Matthau, Erin O'Brien, Joe Mantell, Ray Danton, James Gregory, Joey Bishop, Roscoe Karns, Claude Akins, Peter Brown, and Tige Andrews.
