Movie Adaptations From Famous Children's Books

By Mildred I Bailey

Many of the greatest family books have been adapted to be adored movies. Famous family books that have stood the test of time are often first-class candidates to make a wonderful motion picture, on the other hand, when a book is made into a film it forever begs the question of whether the book is better or the film is better and how closely does the movie go along the story line of the book?

A current film adaptation from a kids book is "The Spiderwick Chronicles" by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. There are actually five books in the sequence but just the one film so far. The movie follows the journey of a family as they move into a new home. The kids find a weird and wonderful aged book that leads them to a world with elves, goblins, trolls, dwarves and other creatures. The film is from 2008.

In 1964, the writer Roald Dahl brought us the beloved book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". This amazing book has been adapted into two very admired films, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" in 1971 with Gene Wilder starring as Willy Wonka and in 2005, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.

One of one and all's much loved children's books seems to be "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White. The volume was originally in print in 1952 and it has never lost its esteem. It is one of the most dearly loved family books of all time. It was first made into an cartoon feature movie in 1973. A living action motion picture adaptation was released in December 2006. Both films followed the story of the book just about exactly.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved family writers of all time. A few of his books have been made into celebrated films. "Horton Hears a Who" came out in 2008 with Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton. This is an animated feature film that follows the storyline of the book practically exactly.

Another Seuss classic, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" was made into an animated edition in 1966 and it still shows on many program schedule during the holiday time. The cartoon account follows the narrative closely. Then again, in the year 2000, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" the live action edition came out with Jim Carrey in the lead character as the Grinch. In that show many new events and scenes were added. In the 2003 adaptation of "The Cat and the Hat" also by Dr. Seuss, liberties were yet again taken and the story was added to with events and scenes not found in the book.

The second maximum grossing big screen series in history was from the children's series of books about "Harry Potter" by J.K. Rowling. 6 of the seven books of the series have now been completed into movies with a proposal for two movies to be adapted from the seventh book for a total of 8 movies all told.

Children's books many times turn into films that are pleasurable for the entire family unit to observe. Reading the books aloud to your children and watching the movies mutually is a excellent family entertainment., where terrific reminiscences can be made.
