Applying for Low Income Housing

By James Lamadar

Low income housing was designed for people that cannot afford to pay market rent. These houses are subsidized by HUD which allows renters to live in a comfortable setting without going over their budget.

In order to be accepted into low income housing, your income must be at the amount specified by HUD. You can get this information from HUDs website. Each county has a different specified income amount.

HUD provides low income housing by giving money to landlords. Landlords would then collect from tenants the remaining rent that HUD does not pay. So in this case tenants can afford housing at a cheaper price.

The quickest way to find low income housing is to go online and do a search. A few sites can help you find the low income housing you are looking for. All you have to do is set where you want to live and how much you can afford in rent and the sites will give you results that fit your match.

Once you decide to go check out the low income housing, you should take some notes. This can be a big help later when you need to review your notes and figure out which low income housing you like.

Chat with the current renter of the low income housing and gauge how they enjoy living there. Ask them if landlord fixes things immediately and whether the landlord respects the tenant.

When going through and looking at the inside of the low income housing, point out all the problems and have it recorded. Tell the landlord to get it fixed before you rent the place.
