Is Making Money On eBay Dead?

By Jason James

The banning of the sale of digital products on eBay has led to many online marketers abandoning the use of eBay as one of their revenue streams. Changes of terms and conditions, and ever increasing fee charges, have had a similar effect too. Still, flexible marketers are finding that, by adapting their approach, eBay still represents opportunities for making money online.

Smart sellers found that while the direct sale of digital products was no longer possible, there is a way to work around it. What they did was to put one or more digital products on a CD or DVD and physically ship it out to customers. In addition to having gotten around the ban on digital products, sellers were able to capitalize on the fact that physical products have a greater perceived value than digital products.

To save time from having to package, label, and ship every CD or DVD you sell, the best thing to do is to use a fulfillment company. Basically, you provide them with a stock of raw materials and the customers details, as they come in at a later date, and they take care of the rest for a flat fee. For each disc that you sell, you could easily make a few dollars in profit.

Turning digital products into physical ones also allows you to include various bonuses and upsells on the discs that you ship out. Just think how much more a trust a customer will have in you when they receive their purchase and find that you have included a previously unannounced bonus with it. They will then be much more likely to follow the links through to your website or squeeze page that you have included and will likely to turn into a long term buying customer.

Another way of making money on eBay is to enter the dropshipping business. Instead of keeping stock or selling something that you own, doing dropshipping will allow you to sell products which belong to someone else, kind of like affiliate marketing. Having decided upon which of the many dropshipping companies to use, the rest of the process is easy to follow through. You simply list one of the dropshipper's products on eBay and, when it sells, submit an order to the dropshipper for that product, providing them with the customers details as you do so. The great thing about this business model is that it doesn't cost you any money out of your pocket. You only pay the dropshipping company's cut out of the proceeds of the sale.

You can virtually sell anything through a dropshipping company on eBay. You'll find companies that sell small items like cell phone accessories, all the way up to large items such as pool tables. Since you are paid a cut of each sale, selling larger items would give you a larger profit margin. However, smaller items are more in demand, so you will probably sell more of them. No matter what you choose to sell, make sure you do the necessary research in order to find a reliable company to work with.
